BR-304 was completely closed at Lajes, on Sunday afternoon (31), after the Salgado River overflowed due to the heavy rain that fell in the region. The highway is the main connection between Natal and Mossoró.

The closure takes place between KM 204 and 206, in both directions, according to the Federal Highway Police (PRF).

The State Public Security Secretariat (Sesed) released the following route options for those traveling through the location:

1st route: BR-304, accesses RN-233 until reaching BR-226, in Triunfo Potiguar, staying on BR-226 until Natal.
2nd route: BR-110, passing through Upanema and Campo Grande to access BR-226, arriving at Triunfo Potiguar and continues via Jucurutu, Currais Novos until Natal.

Access via RN-233 to access BR-226, until Triunfo Potiguar and follow the federal highway to Natal.

Dnit reported that a technical team from the Superintendency Operations Service went to the site to assess the damage caused by the heavy rains that occurred in the region, as well as check the traffic conditions of the highway. According to the agency, “it is necessary for the rain to stop so that a deeper inspection can be carried out, in order to make a more accurate diagnosis.”

A group of 9 children and teenagers who were watching the reservoirs bleed were stranded on Sunday afternoon (31) in a rock formation in the bed of the Salgado River.

The Military Fire Department, with the help of four civilians, concluded the rescue of the group at 10:30 pm. According to Sesed, everyone is doing well and receiving medical care.

Also according to Sesed, the State Government’s two helicopters could not be used in this rescue because “they are undergoing maintenance to replace parts due to natural wear and tear”.

“A Federal Highway Police aircraft is on standby to move from the state of Pernambuco to Rio Grande do Norte this Monday (01/04) in support of the actions of the security forces and Civil Defense”, stated, in a note, the Sesed.
