Gringolândia analyzes: Is Bayern a match for Real Madrid in the Champions League?
Bayern Munich and Real Madrid will fall on the same side of the quarter-final bracket, considered the “heaviest”. The German team eliminated Arsenal, currently leaders of the Premier League. After the 2-2 draw in the first leg, won 1-0 in the return, in Germany.
Bayern Munich had great news this Monday. Musiala, Gnabry, Sané, Laimer and Upamecano trained normally and should all be available for the game. Defender De Ligt should be absent, on the other hand. He is recovering from a knee injury.
— The semi-final already feels like a final. My approach is to treat it like the final. It won’t be like we have one more game yet. I want to play this match alone. Let’s hand over everything, and then we’ll see. We are ready and full of confidence — said coach Thomas Tuchel.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti will be without right-back Carvajal (suspended). Lucas Vázquez will be the starter — he did well in the victory in the classic against Barcelona. Goalkeeper Courtois and defender Éder Militão were linked, but the tendency is for them to start on the bench.
— Let’s face an opponent who has his weapons, quality, strength, individual talent. We have to defend well and avoid counterattacks. We have to play a complete game. They didn’t have the best season in the Bundesliga, but they played impressively against Arsenal. Their history is more or less the same as ours in the Champions League, and that counts for a lot — commented the coach.
Bayern and Real Madrid are the two teams that have faced each other the most times in history of the Champions League. There have been 26 games to date, with 12 wins for Real, three draws and 11 wins for Bayern. The last clash took place in the semi-final of the 2017/18 season. Real beat Bayern away from home, in the first leg, 2-1, and then secured qualification with a 2-2 win at the Bernabéu.
The return match will be next week, May 8, at the Santiago Bernabéu.
