The death of the first patient to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant was not caused by the procedure, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) said on Sunday (12).

Richard Slayman, aged 62, suffered from end-stage kidney disease and received the kidney in March. The surgery, performed at Massachusetts General Hospital, lasted approximately four hours and was considered a Historic mark.

Besides the kidney disease, he suffered from type 2 diabetes and hypertension. He had received a human kidney in 2018, but the organ stopped working five years later, and the patient depended on hemodialysis.

“Mass General is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Mr. Rick Slayman. We have no indication that this was a result of his recent transplant,” the medical unit said in a statement.

The pig’s organ was provided by Massachusetts biotechnology company eGenesis, which genetically modified it to remove harmful genes and add human genes.

Brazilian among surgeons

The Brazilian doctor Leonardo Riella led the first successful transplant from a pig kidney to a human being in Boston, United States, announced the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) this Thursday.
