AstraZeneca admits to court rare side effect in Covid vaccine

-

Pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca admitted to the Court, for the first time, the occurrence of a “rare side effect” in the vaccine it produces against Covid-19. The information was included in a class action filed by people who developed thrombosis after vaccination in England. In the process, 51 families are asking for compensation of up to R$700 million.

AstraZeneca acknowledged that the vaccine “may, in very rare cases, cause thrombosis syndrome with thrombocytopenia (TTS)”. This condition is characterized by the formation of blood clots, which increases the risk of clogging of veins and arteries.

Goiânia City Hall provides a vaccination drive-thru in the Serra Dourada Stadium parking lot. Immunization against CoViD-19 and Influenza in the first stage, until April 30, is aimed at seniors aged 60 and over, as well as healthcare workers. The Influenza vaccine is trivalent and is effective against H1N1, H3N2 and type B strains.

In Brazil, the vaccine was produced in a consortium with Fiocruz and applied to 153 million people, especially in 2021 and 2022. The pharmaceutical company’s admission of side effects has now become the target of comments in political circles.

The Ministry of Health states that the AstraZeneca vaccine for Covid-19 has already saved thousands of lives, and that non-immunization would be the worst path.

“The vaccine manufactured by the company AstraZeneca/Oxford, developed at the beginning of the pandemic, and produced by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), was extremely important for controlling cases and reducing deaths from Covid-19 in the country and around the world, saving thousands of lives. Since December 2022, this vaccine has been recommended for people aged 40 and over, according to the most recent scientific evidence”, says the ministry.

“The current Covid-19 scenario in the country, with a reduction in serious cases and deaths from the disease, is the result of the vaccinated population. Adverse events, inherent to any medicine or immunizer, are rare and occur, on average, one for every 100,000 doses applied, presenting a significantly lower risk than complications caused by Covid-19 infection”, added the Ministry of Health, in statement issued last year.
