Minister talks about taking “scenarios” to President Lula; measure on state debt will be discussed in a virtual meeting with governor Eduardo Leite

The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, said this Monday (May 13, 2024) that he will take “scenarios” to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to draw up an aid plan “direct” to families in Rio Grande do Sul. He stated that the format of a possible program should be decided by Tuesday (May 14) and announced this week.

Haddad said the government will create a “hotline” for the families served, but did not go into details. Asked if it will be a type of emergency aid, along the lines of what was adopted during the Covid-19 pandemic, he declared that he will still discuss the “scenarios” with President Lula.

He stated that the measures to be adopted complement the release of the FGTS (Service Time Guarantee Fund) and the salary bonus. The plan still needs to be defined, according to him.

“The proposals have already reached us and we have developed some scenarios. We must take it to the president today and mature it by tomorrow to eventually announce direct support to families this week, in addition to that already announced by the Ministries of Social Security and Labor”he declared.

STATE DEBT

Haddad declared that Lula will announce a specific measure on the Rio Grande do Sul government’s debt this Monday (May 13) in a ceremony with representatives of the Chamber, Senate and Supreme Court. However, according to Secom (Secretariat of Social Communication), any announcement will only be made after a virtual meeting between the president, the minister and governor Eduardo Leite, scheduled for 3:30 pm.

On Sunday (May 12, 2024), Haddad said that the State could spend up to 2 years without paying the installments of its debt with the Union. The measure will provide an extra R$8 billion for the reconstruction of cities hit by the rains.

According to Haddad, every 1 or 2 days new measures will be prepared according to specificity and need. “Sometimes it’s the family, sometimes it’s the businessman, sometimes it’s the farmer, or the municipality or the State. We are being very careful to take measures in accordance with an appropriate and sustainable format, always with the monitoring of the other Powers and the Court of Auditors [da União]”, he said.

The minister said that the governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), is “totally” in tune with the guidelines, and that, for now, only the calamity will be dealt with, but that, at another time, the Treasury will resume the debate on the debts of the other States.
