Two months after the tragic death of a dolphin at Kolmården Zooin Sweden, experts reported that the animal died after suffocating on artificial seaweed. The results of expert examinations went viral on social media and caused a mixture of commotion and outrage among internet userswho stated that the case involves cruelty against marine animals in captivity.

The dolphin Nephele was a 40-year-old female and the oldest in the Swedish zoo. She was completely healthy, but on January 15 The establishment’s employees were surprised by the animal’s deathwhich began to behave strangely until it sank in the tank.

“It was a quick process. When the veterinarian arrived at the scene, she had already passed away. This is very sad. Nephele was a very beloved dolphin”, lamented the zoo’s chief biologist, Bim Boijsen. Two months later, the Swedish Veterinary Medical Institute released the necroscopic reports.

The tests showed that Nephele died of suffocation after choking on artificial algae, implemented in the dolphin enclosure as ‘environmental enrichment’. “The piece of algae was found in her throat and became so lodged that it impaired her breathing,” said the biologist.

After the tragedy came to light, internet users were outraged and called for an end to presentations with marine animals in aquariums across the country. “Empty the tanks, no more slavery for entertainment,” protested a follower. Another also lamented the tragedy and accused the zoo of ‘cruelty’.

The biologist reiterated that the zoo is in the process of ending entertainment activities with dolphins, but the measure does not yet have a deadline to be completed. After Nephele’s death, 11 other animals remain in tanks at the facility.
