Soon after, it was the turn of the Iranian supreme leader, Aitollah Ali Khamenei, to react. According to him, Israel must be “punished.” “We will make the Zionist regime regret this crime and others,” he threatened.

The bombing destroyed the Iranian embassy annex in Damascus and killed at least eleven people. In a statement, the Guardians of the Revolution, the ideological army of the Islamic Republic, confirmed that seven of its members, including two senior commanders of the Qods Force – its foreign operations arm – were among the victims. So far, the Israeli government has not confirmed responsibility for the bombing.

Message to the USA

Iran also said it had sent an “important message to the United States” in which it highlighted that Washington “must be held responsible” for the attack due to its support for Israel. The American government has indicated that it has “no involvement” in the bombing.

The United Nations Security Council is holding a meeting on the attack this Tuesday in New York at the request of Russia. This morning, China condemned the bombing, stating that “the security of diplomatic institutions cannot be violated.”

Attack on diplomatic building

The bombing, carried out by “six missiles fired by F-35 fighter jets”, according to Tehran, is the first to hit an Iranian diplomatic building in Syria. The country, in civil war since 2011, is supported by Iran, a historic ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
