Porto Alegre (RS) – Four Brazilian players won in the opening round of the Brasil Tennis Open, a challenger played at Associação Leopoldina Juvenil in Porto Alegre. The day was one of victories for Mateus Alves, Karue Sell, Nicolas Zanellato and Daniel Dutra da Silva. Due to the rain in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, the games of the round took place on the covered courts at Clubinho, located on Avenida Nova York.

The most significant victory was that of Karue Sell. Coming from qualifying, the 30-year-old from Santa Catarina scored calm splits of 6/2 and 6/1 against Frenchman Calvin Hemery, the tournament’s top seed and 194th in the rankings, in just 1h20. The current 555th in the ranking now awaits the winner of the match between Pedro Boscardin, also from Santa Catarina, and Argentine Valerio Aboian, who will play late this Tuesday night.

The one who also eliminated one of the top seeds was Daniel Dutra da Silva, a 35-year-old left-hander and 464th in the world. He fought for 3h19 to beat Venezuelan Gonzalo Oliveira, fourth favorite and 243rd in the rankings, by 7/5, 4/6 and 7/5. Daniel faces Argentine Gonzalo Villanueva, ranked 423rd, in the round of 16 and the tormentor of 15-year-old Luis Augusto Miguel from Goiás by 6/2 and 6/0.

In another very long game, Nicolas Zanellato from São Paulo needed 2h55 to beat Greek Stefanos Sakellaridis 6/3, 6/7 (6-8) and 7/6 (7-5). Zanellato, 22 years old and 458th in the rankings, faces in the second round the 20-year-old Peruvian Gonzalo Bueno, 361st in the world. It will be the third duel between them, after a victory for each side.

In a national duel, 23-year-old São Paulo native Mateus Alves confirmed his favoritism against 18-year-old Paraná teenager Gustavo Almeida and scored 7/6 (7-1) and 6/0. Currently 394th in the ranking, Alves faces the Bolivian from the quali Juan Carlos Prado Angelo, a 19-year-old young man and 490th placed.
