Abigail is showing in Brazilian cinemas, a modern reimagining of a classic Universal monster film.

Abigail is showing in Brazilian cinemas, a vampire film starring Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens and Kathryn Newton. But did you know that the production led by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett has a special connection to Dracula? More precisely, a forgotten film about the character available on streaming.

The film is a kind of modern reimagining of Dracula’s Daughter (1936), sequel to Bela Lugosi’s classic Dracula (1931), and is available in the Looke catalog (also through the Prime Video platform) and NetMovies. Alisha Weir, who played Matilda in the 2022 musical film, takes on the character in Abigail.

In an interview with Rue Morgue, director Tyler Gillett explained how Abigail really is an original reimagining of Universal’s film Dracula’s Daughter.

We can see that Stephen Shields, who wrote the original draft of the script, definitely had this in mind. I think he hacked the system very cleverly, creating something original around something familiar that was initially a version of Dracula’s daughter. But to Universal’s credit, when we got involved, they were very excited about the possibility of us taking what was on the page and turning it into something entirely new.

“They encouraged us not to feel restricted by Dracula’s Daughter, or any other lineage of vampires.”adds the director of Abigail. “What this meant for us was that we had to rewatch all of our favorite vampire movies and instead of borrowing any one of them specifically, we just watched the entire canon and realized there was a real opportunity – because of the ways that Vampires have been covered in films and on TV – so we can step in and take a strange, new and fun look at what our version of this monster could be.”.

Universal’s monster universe has a glorious past in Hollywood horror, especially in the 30s to 50s, when legendary figures such as Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Invisible Man and the Werewolf were successful. A few years ago, they tried to start a modern shared universe with the Dark Universe franchise, but the failure of The Mummy (2017) with Tom Cruise put an end to those plans.

In Abigail, a peculiar group of criminals accepts yet another typical job. This time, the proposal is to kidnap a twelve-year-old dancer, daughter of one of the most powerful men in the underworld. While the group’s contractor demands a $50 million ransom for the girl’s father, the group only needs to observe the child for one night in an isolated mansion. However, when the kidnappers begin to disappear, they soon discover the hard way that they are locked inside the house with a not-so-normal little girl.
