The city of Claros dos Poções is the first in the North of Minas to receive the Itinerante Castramóvel, this Tuesday (30), in the “Patas Seguras” project, carried out by the Intermunicipal Consortium for Sustainable Development of the North of Minas (Codanorte) with support of the State Department of the Environment.

The mayor reports that there is a municipal law requiring owners to register animals in the epidemiology sector, however, especially the most vulnerable population, is resistant to the measure, making it difficult to quantify the animals. For this task, the municipality counted on the work of a Codanorte technician who identified, in Claros dos Poções, a population of 774 dogs and 97 cats, resulting in 871 animals in the city. 10% of this total will be castrated, around 90 animals.
The Castramóvel is a vehicle adapted for the castration service and follows sanitary and public health standards. According to the technical person responsible for itinerant castration, veterinarian Arnaldo Ventuatto, the procedure is definitive and impedes the animal’s reproductive capacity. In males, the technique consists of surgical removal of the testicles and in females, the ovaries, uterine tubes and uterus are removed.
According to a survey released by the Consortium, the North of Minas has at least 136 thousand animals and of these, 10% live on the streets. In this first phase, the goal is to neuter more than 15 thousand dogs and cats, including domestic and street animals, in the 17 participating municipalities. “These municipalities showed interest in the service. Later, it will be expanded so that all 64 consortium municipalities are covered”, said Eduardo Rabelo, president of Codanorte.
After Claros dos Poções, the Castramóvel will go to the municipalities of Francisco Dumont (May 7th to 10th), Brasília de Minas (May 14th to 17th), Icaraí de Minas (May 21st to 24th) and Ubai (May 28th to 31st). May). In them, the location has not yet been defined. The next cities that do not yet have a defined date, but are on the list to receive the service are: São João do Pacuí, Itacambira, Grão Mogol, Pedras de Maria da Cruz, Japonvar, Bonito de Minas, Bocaiuva, Olhos D’água , Januária, Pirapora, Várzea da Palma and Lassance.

Montes Claros City Hall is not a consortium member of Codanorte. In the municipality, the free castration service is provided by the Zoonosis Control Center (CCZ), per region. There is no scheduling, and you have to wait for the agents to visit the houses in specific regions and the resident who is interested can register.
According to councilor Cecília Meireles (Ceci Protetora), castration is still not satisfactory by the municipality and, through the councilor’s projects, the number of castrations was three times greater than those carried out by the municipality. “The castrammobile, which has been parked in the CCZ since 2021, carrying out few castrations, will go to rural areas and peripheral areas at our request. We are also finalizing the adjustments to promote more than 3,500 castrations in a clinic that won a bid for a resource of 500,000 through a parliamentary partnership”, informed the councilor’s office.
