Amnesty International releases report on human rights around the world and cites cases of violence in RJ

A global report released this Wednesday (24) by Amnesty International, with data from 156 countries, reveals that Brazil recorded more than 3.4 million possible human rights violations in 2023.

The number considers records from the federal government’s National Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office and indicates an increase of 41% in relation to complaints registered in 2022.

In the report “The state of human rights in the world”, published by Amnesty International each year, the entity states that Brazil “continues to have one of the highest levels of inequality in the world” – which, according to them, mainly affects black people, women and trans people.

The report has more than 400 pages, and the Brazilian situation is described in five of them. The text brings together general data and mentions specific episodes, such as:

  • the coup acts at the Esplanada dos Ministérios, in Brasília, on January 8, 2023;
  • the six days of police operations in Favela da Maré, in Rio de Janeiro, which left 120,000 residents without access to classes, electricity and medical care, for example;
  • the deaths, caused by police officers, of children and adolescents such as Thiago Menezes (13 years old), Eloah Passos (5 years old) and Heloísa Santos (3 years old);
  • impunity in cases such as the Curió Massacre, in Ceará, in 2015, and the Marielle case – in which the alleged perpetrators were only arrested last month, six years after the crime.

Still according to the material:

  • at least 394 people were murdered by police officers in operations in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Bahia;
  • at least three human rights activists were killed every month in Brazil between 2020 and 2023 – the data is from the NGO Justiça Global;
  • from January to October 2023, the National Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office recorded 3,873 possible violations against trans people – more than the 3,309 recorded in the entire year 2022;
  • at least 19 women died in circumstances of unsafe abortions – the induced termination of pregnancy is a crime in Brazil, except for some exceptions.
