Storm causes damage in cities in RS; Santa Cruz do Sul had hail | Rio Grande do Sul

Several cities in Rio Grande do Sul registered temporal on Saturday afternoon (27). The main impacts were observed in Vale do Rio Pardo, approximately 150 km from Porto Alegre. In Santa Cruz do Sul, there was hail and houses were damaged (see details below).

In Quaraí, on the Western Border, the accumulated rainfall in the last 24 hours was from 170.8 millimetersaccording to the National Center for Natural Disaster Monitoring and Alerts (Cemaden), and 178.6 millimetersaccording to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet).

The state still has a risk of storms in much of the Northern Half until Sunday (28). There is a chance of strong rain and wind and hail, according to Inmet.

The Porto Alegre Civil Defense warns preventively of the potential risk of intense rain, with strong gusts of wind (between 40 and 60km/h) and the risk of electrical discharges, flooding and possible hail. The warning is valid until 1am on Sunday.

In Santa Cruz do Sul, there was hail fall. The municipality’s Civil Defense states that at least 700 homes and 3,100 people were affected by the storm. Another 25 locations had trees fall. There are no reports of injured people.

The concessionaire RGE states that 16 thousand points were left without power in the city. Santa Cruz do Sul City Hall distributes tarpaulins to affected families in Oktoberfest Park, in the building attached to the Events Center.

Also in Vale do Rio Pardo, in Venâncio Aires, the Fire Department recorded 13 incidents related to rain.

In Vera Cruz, access to the city via Estrada Geral de Ferraz and Rua Ernesto Wild was blocked by trees, but has now been reopened. One person sought a tarpaulin from the Fire Department.

In Candelária, Parque Itamar Vezentin, which is preparing to host Expocande 2024 from Tuesday (30), was hit by the storm. There were falling structures and damage to the electrical network. There were no injuries.
