Prosecutor calls for impeachment of governor allied with Renan Calheiros

O Electoral Public Ministry (MPE) filed this Monday, 1st, an opinion requesting the impeachment of the governor of Alagoas, Paulo Dantas (MDB), ally of senator Renan Calheiros (MDB). In addition to Dantas, the piece signed by prosecutor Antonio Henrique de Amorim Cadete also calls for the impeachment of deputy Ronaldo Lessa (PDT).

The action was filed by Senator Rodrigo Cunha (Podemos-AL), ally of the president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL). Both are political opponents of the governor’s group and Renan Calheiros in the state of Alagoas.

The impeachment request was presented for alleged abuse of economic power during the 2022 campaign. The accusation alleges that the then governor and candidate for re-election, Paulo Dantas, and his vice-president had benefited from the launch of the program “Pact against Hunger” and distributed basic food baskets to the population on the eve of the election.

“Stresses that the creation and effective start of budget execution of the assistance program only occurred in the middle of an election year, more precisely in the three months preceding the event, allegedly with the objective of carrying out joint actions to combat food insecurity for people living in situation of extreme poverty”, says the electoral attorney in the petition obtained by The Antagonist.

Paulo Dantas took over the government after the then governor, Renan Filho, son of Renan Calheiros, leaves his post to run for the position of senator for the state. Filho was elected senator and is currently Minister of Transport in the Lula (PT) government.

“The Investigator also alleges the practice of prohibited conduct provided for in art. 73, IV, of Law 9,504/97, since the Investigated Paulo Dantas and Renan Filho used the “PACTO AGAINST FOME” program as an instrument to promote their candidacies, linking their images directly to the granting of established social benefits, aiming to obtain undue electoral advantage. It highlights that the program launch ceremony, which took place on 06/28/2022, in the city of Arapiraca/AL, was attended by hundreds of people, with those investigated taking advantage of the occasion to enhance their images and personalize the aid that would be granted”adds Amorim Cadete.
