What is Oropouche fever?

The disease has symptoms similar to dengue and is transmitted by mosquitoes, mainly Culicoides paraensisknown as maruim and responsible for the emergency situation decree in Luiz Alves, and the Culex quinquefasciatuspopularly called mosquito.

As these insects reproduce in places with organic matter, unlike Aedes aegyptiwhich needs still water, population control of these mosquitoes is more difficult.

At the time of confirming the cases in Botuverá, the director of the Santa Catarina Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate (Dive/SC), João Augusto Fuck, said that “the guidance for people is to keep their yard clean, maintain individual protection measures, screens on windows, use of repellent, in short, to avoid mosquito bites”.

According to the Ministry of Health, Oropouche fever is caused by an arbovirus.

The symptoms are similar to those of dengue and chikungunya fever. Are they:

  • headache
  • muscle pain
  • joint pain
  • nausea
  • diarrhea

There is no specific treatment. Patients must remain at rest, with symptoms treated, and be monitored by the municipal health network, according to Dive.

The disease began to be registered in Brazil in 1960 and occurred more in the North of the country, according to the director of Dive/SC.
