Traffic on Av Brasil: Drivers take 3 hours from Deodoro to Terminal Gentileza

On the second working day of BRT Transbrasil operation, the RJ1 traveled by car from Deodoro, in the West Zone of Rio, to the Gentileza Terminal, in the Center. The movement along Avenida Brasil was done in 3 hours. On Monday (1st), via the express corridor, the reporting team took 50 minutes between the two terminals.

Leaving Guadalupe, traffic was reasonable until 6:45 am, when the flow began to stop. From the starting point to Fazenda Botafogo it is 3.5 km. The time taken was 30 minutes. To Irajá, which is not even halfway, it was 50 minutes of traffic jams.

The travel time taken by car on Avenida Brasil is comparable to a trip from the capital of Rio de Janeiro to Cachoeira Paulista, in the interior of the state of São Paulo. Using the GPS, the tour takes 2h44.

If the destination is the city of Campos, in the north of the state, it takes 3h25 to travel. For the Lakes Region, the average is 2h20.

The 17 BRT Transbrasil stations began operating last Saturday (30). Buses leave from Deodoro to the Gentileza Terminal, from 10am to 3pm, at 10-minute intervals.

26 km long, the Transbrasil corridor has two terminals: Gentileza and Deodoro. The express corridor crosses 18 neighborhoods and is expected to transport 250,000 people per day by 2030. Once fully operational, the city council estimates that there will be a 50% reduction in travel time.

CET-Rio reported that 800 vehicles have already been fined for traveling in the exclusive BRT Transbrasil lane.

The inauguration of the express lane, however, displeased drivers who use the expressway daily.

Businessman Geraldo Orias says that it took 1h10 to get from Jacarepaguá to Mercado São Sebastião, in Penha, North Zone. Now, the time has more than doubled.

“They reduced the lanes, 2h50 here, to Mercado São Sebastião. It’s hard to work, I’m already late,” he laments.

“The two lanes that the BRTs took made traffic much more difficult for us drivers,” said professor Mariana Ramos.

For those who don’t drive or prefer to leave their car at home, articulated vehicles are a good option.

“Yesterday I arrived from the Lagos Region and went to Ilha do Governador. It took 20 minutes, I quickly arrived at Ilha do Governador, without traffic, without anything. I’m loving it” said a passenger.

“Rate 10. Very fast. I came from Piscinão de Ramos to Terminal Gentileza in just 16 minutes.”
