SC is preparing for rain of up to 200 millimeters, with risk of landslides this Thursday

The heavy rains that have been punishing Rio Grande do Sul since Sunday (28) are expected to reach Santa Catarina this Thursday (2). The instability begins at dawn in the center-south of Santa Catarina, in the areas bordering the state of Rio Grande do Sul in the Grande Oeste, Planalto Sul and Litoral Sul, and throughout the day they advance towards the Alto Vale do Itajaí and Grande Florianópolis.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) issued a warning for rain in the period between 8am and 3pm in the southern half of the state. There is a great risk of flooding, river overflows and slope slides, according to the institute.

Civil Defense also issued attention alert for events related to flooding, floods and landslides, as well as storms with the risk of electrical discharges, gusts of wind and hail.

Between Thursday and Friday (3), between 150 and 200 millimeters are expected to accumulate in the Far West, West and in areas of the Midwest, Planalto Sul and Litoral Sul that border Rio Grande do Sul. In the Northern half of the Mid- Oeste, Planalto Sul, Litoral Sul and in the areas of Alto Vale do Itajaí and Grande Florianópolis, volumes should be around 100 millimeters.

Temperatures will remain high, with minimums of 22°C to 25°C in the Greater West and on the Coast, and 17°C to 21°C in other regions. Maximum temperatures hover around 30°C in most of the state, and can exceed 35°C on the North Coast.

Civil Defense Recommendations

  • Avoid areas subject to flooding and avoid crossing flooded streets and submerged bridges
  • In case of storms, avoid outdoor activities, seeking shelter in safe places
  • Remember to remain aware of the Warnings and Alerts issued by Civil Defense
