At least eight people were treated at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) in Porto de Galinhas, in Ipojuca, on the South Coast of Pernambuco, after they felt unwell after consuming a synthetic type K drug. According to the Ipojuca Health Department, The patients were admitted to the unit on Thursday (2), taken by the population themselves, after showing symptoms of lack of control.

According to the Department of Health, some people were depressed, and others had hallucinations.

“Everyone was treated, treated and released after recovering,” said the city hall, adding that there were no attacks on the medical team.

According to the Civil Police of Pernambuco, the Porto de Galinhas police station is investigating the case and has already started investigations.

Police chief Ney Luiz Rodrigues said, in an interview with g1, that the police found out about the calls informally and began to investigate, firstly, to understand what actually happened.

“One of our teams went to the UPA and checked with the medical team that at least 10 people had been treated. According to these people’s reports, they had participated in a party and used this drug. They started to feel sick, with nausea, headaches, and sought medical care in the health network,” said Rodrigues.

Also according to the delegate, this is the first record of type K drugs in the Porto de Galinhas region. Rodrigues explained that investigations will continue to clarify where and how the drugs were used and who supplied the drugs.

Type K drugs are developed in the laboratory and have a high destructive potential. Known on the streets as K2, K4, K9 and spice, they have attracted the attention of governments due to the damage caused to users.

Although they are often called “synthetic marijuana”, the name is considered inappropriate, as synthetic drugs are not derived from plants and have no relationship with cannabis, and can influence the debate on the use of medicinal cannabis.

“It is sold as artificial marijuana, fake marijuana, marijuana something, with names that allude to it being more harmless. It makes it seem like something supernatural and not very harmful, but what we realize is that it is a synthetic drug with potential It is very harmful to those who use it and can lead to death,” the researcher told g1.

Fukushima also warned that K drugs pose a risk not only to those who use them, but also to people who come into contact with them, as they can become aggressive. According to researchers, the potential of this type of narcotic is 100 times greater than marijuana.

“K drugs are dangerous, and when we call them marijuana they have less potential. You don’t hear about marijuana overdoses, for example”, analyzed Fukushima.

Among the symptoms that K drugs can cause in users’ bodies are:

  • They cause dependence;
  • They affect different regions of the body;
  • They have the potential to increase depression;
  • Increased heart rate;
  • Attacks of anger and aggression;
  • Paranoia;
  • Anxiety;
  • Hallucinations;
  • Seizures;
  • Renal insufficiency;
  • Cardiac arrhythmias;
  • Death.
