Aiming to preserve the building built in the 1960s, which housed the Colégio dos Padres and Colégio Meta, the government of Acre, with its own resources and the World Bank, invested more than R$ 16 million to make the work that transformed the space into the Museum of the Acrean Peoples. On August 6, 2023, the first stage of the renovation and revitalization of the building was delivered, which, in addition to its cultural value, boosted the local economy. During the execution of the work, more than 62 direct workers were hired in the civil construction area.

Completed during the administration of Governor Gladson Cameli, the work comprises an important appreciation of the history and culture of Acre, in addition to being a tourist attraction in Rio Branco full of elements that refer to the history and identity of its people. In the museum, visitors will find spaces such as the Chico Mendes Room, the Acre Forest Room, the Personalities Room, the Interactive Room, among other spaces that rescue the history and memory of Acre culture.

In its structure, the Museum has important collections about the history and culture of Acre, as well as furniture and technological and interactive equipment, which are items characterized as historical, archaeological, paleontological, ethnographic, linguistic, folkloric, urban planning, architectural, artistic, bibliographic, cinematographic, videographic and audiophonic that were and are relevant to sociocultural development and the preservation of regional identity.

With air-conditioned rooms and special lighting, the museum also offers a café space, an internal atrium, an auditorium and a square, where artistic and cultural presentations are held, with documentaries, films, lectures, musical shows and plays.

Another very popular space is Loja Bem Acreano, which has attracted many visitors and tourists in general. The store sells regional crafts and souvenirs, such as decorative products, rubber shoes, ceramic products, biojewelry, basketwork, troughs, among other items, as well as souvenirs that bear the Acre brand, such as blouses, caps, keychains, among others. .

The Museu dos Povos Acreanos is one of the spaces coordinated by the Elias Mansour Foundation (FEM), which has a Museum Plan. The seven visiting spaces on the first floor demonstrate the Acre government’s commitment to highlighting the history of the people of Acre.

Since its inauguration, in August 2023, the Museu dos Povos Acreanos has received 15 thousand visitors. From January to March the place has been receiving around 3 thousand visits per month. Located in the center of Rio Branco, the museum brings together a series of stories and memories of characters who are part of the historical context of the emergence of the state.

With 37 servers, the space is open from Wednesday to Sunday, from 9am to 6pm, and has several employees who are divided between guides, support staff, cleaning staff and other sectors. And to promote a humanized space integrated with cultural actions, the museum features the work of artists from different areas.

Working at the Public Library of Rio Branco as a reading agent and storyteller, artist Marina Vaz was invited to work as a guide at the Museu dos Povos Acreanos. With a degree in Forestry Engineering and a background in dance and theater, she saw the opportunity to further expand her knowledge and meet new people.

“For me, it is very pleasurable to provide this service to the public and tell the history of the state, to bring this appreciation of history and a little of what I know as an artist to people. And, in fact, it’s easy to do all this service, which is something I already bring from the stage, from the theater. Service is a great chance for relationships too. We meet people every day here, from different corners, not only in Brazil but also from other countries, so these are opportunities”, explains Marina.

During the guided tour, she shows the collection of writer and journalist Leandro Tocantins, talks about the state’s prominent personalities, and introduces the interactive room, where it is possible to play with Acre crosswords.

During the visit, it is also possible to see the Purussaurus, the famous giant alligator, learn about Chico Mendes and the Amazon rainforest, as well as art exhibitions and themed samples, such as a rubber tapper’s house, the catraia, some Amazonian seeds, among other environments offered by the museum.

“This appreciation of history, making people actually come here and reflect on their stories, is the richest and most important thing we can offer, making people from Acre, in fact, recognize themselves and where they come from , what is your story, and not be ashamed of it, because the consequence of all this appreciation will come later in tourism, in commerce. And, this is what we understand as the richest here, this search for knowledge, action, ancestry and the appreciation of Acreans”, highlights the artist.

Regarding the social function of preserving memory and passing on history to the next generations, the Museum’s coordinator, Aurinete Franco, who has worked in culture in the state for 35 years, emphasizes that the museum has been fulfilling this role with excellence.

“This cultural instrument has developed its role, re-educating people and educating about visitation, and also expanding the sense of understanding and understanding who we are, because we are a people. But who are these people? A mix of people. And this mix of people has specific peculiarities of our culture and identity. So, the museum has made people remember who they are and, for new people, it allows them to learn about our ancestors, where we came from and where we came from. So, this is the museum’s challenge. We are here, but where are we going in 50 years?”, he asks.

Visitation

Regarding the organization of the guided tour and cultural events, the Museum coordinator explains: “We have a schedule via Instagram: @museudospovosacreanos. So, if the public who comes to hold an event here signals it by filling out this form, we will check the agenda, the time and give feedback. And then, as it is a visiting space, normally on the weekend, we say this: the Atrium is available from 5 pm, which is when the guided tour ends, and then the cultural stage begins, so as not to interfere with the dynamics of visitation, because the museum is a contemplative space, so there needs to be silence so that people can appreciate the works of art, reading and others”.

The museum also has an auditorium and a cultural stage, which is the Atrium, which hosts, every Saturday, in a partnership with Arte de Viver, a moment of expression and contemplation of the space. Another point of expression is at Praça Meandros, where music activities, parades and other pre-scheduled events are held, so as not to compromise the functioning of the space.
