“I deeply respect the decision of the appeals court and will pay $175 million […] very quickly, within ten days”, the Republican presidential candidate reacted at the time.

In mid-February, Donald Trump was fined US$454 million (R$2.29 billion) along with his sons Eric and Don Jr. for financial fraud within his real estate empire, the Trump Organization.

They have been accused of inflating their real estate assets, such as Trump Tower and New York’s 40 Wall Street building, by billions of dollars throughout the 2010s to obtain more favorable loans from banks.

After the conviction, New York State Attorney General Letitia James threatened to impose seizures to recover the amount of the fine, citing the 40 Wall Street building.

The judicial hurdles, however, are far from over for the former president, who won the primary for his party’s presidential candidacy and, barring any surprises, will face Joe Biden in November.

Trump has four criminal cases pending. He is expected to face two in Georgia and in federal court in Washington over alleged illegal attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. The other case relates to his possession of confidential documents when he left the White House in 2021.
