The death of driver Ayrton Senna turns 30 this Wednesday (1st). Three-time Formula 1 world champion, the Brazilian died after an accident at the San Marino Grand Prix, in Ímola, Italy, an event that caused great commotion in Brazil.

Ayrton Senna died at the age of 34. His debut in F1 took place in 1984. The driver worked for Toleman (1984), Lotus (1985 to 1987), McLaren (1988 to 1993) and Williams (1994), with titles in 1988, 1990 and 1991.

Senna’s achievements in F1

1988

Ayrton Senna had a historic first year at McLaren. And the achievement also had an opponent who, in principle, was a colleague: the Frenchman Alain Prost, also from McLaren.

Despite a fierce dispute, the title came in the penultimate stage, at the Japanese GP. Senna had problems at the start and, despite falling from pole position to 17th place, he managed to overtake everyone in front – including Prost – and won F1 for the first time.

In 1988, Ayrton Senna won eight GPs; Prost had seven victories; and Gerhard Berger, Austrian Ferrari driver, one.

After seeing his teammate Prost win in 1989 and come second in F1, Senna turned the Frenchman around. Now officially a rival, with Prost at Ferrari, the Brazilian reached his second achievement.

In a new fierce dispute throughout the season, Senna arrived at the Japanese GP, the third to last of the year, with an advantage over Prost. The Brazilian started on pole, but saw the Frenchman take the lead. After Senna’s reaction, the rivals collided in the first corner.

The collision at that point gave Senna the title. In 1990, Senna won six GPs; Prost five; Nelson Piquet, Brazilian from Benetton, two; and Riccardo Patrese, Italian from Williams, Thierry Boutsen, Belgian from Williams, and Nigel Mansell, British from Ferrari, one.

1991

In 1991, Senna did not have Prost as his main rival, but rather Mansell, now at Benetton. Despite being fierce, won in the penultimate edition, it was the Brazilian’s most comfortable title.

In a new edition of the Japanese GP, Senna became champion after seeing Mansell abandon the race. It was the only title year for the Brazilian with a victory in the Brazilian GP, which since 1990 has returned to Interlagos, in São Paulo.

Senna won seven GPs; Mansell five; Patrese two; and Piquet and Berger (now Ayrton Senna’s teammate at McLaren) one.
