The Multipurpose Intermunicipal Consortium for Sustainable Environmental Development in the North of Minas (Codanorte) will carry out free neutering of dogs and cats in 17 municipalities in the North of Minas, through the “Patas Seguras” program (see list below). The objective is to control the reproduction of stray or domestic animals.
The service will be itinerant and the first city served will be Claro dos Poções, starting this Tuesday (30). The Castramóvel will remain in the city until next Friday and is expected to serve around 100 animals.
In the 17 cities, the goal is to neuter 17 thousand dogs and cats, including domestic and street dogs. A survey by the Public Ministry shows that the North of Minas Gerais has at least 136 thousand animals. Of these, 10% live on the streets.
“Population control of dogs and cats, especially stray animals, plays a fundamental role in collective health, preventing the transmission of diseases between animals and humans, reducing the risk of accidents and promoting a safer and healthier environment for everyone. This measure is viable through environmental awareness and education. By controlling the population of these species, we significantly contribute to combating abuse and abandonment on the streets, in addition to enabling epidemiological control”, said the president of Codanorte, Eduardo Rabelo, in a statement sent to the press.
For animals to be castrated, the guardian needs to go to the castration location and register, or contact the municipal Environment Department, and follow some guidelines such as fasting the dog or cat for eight hours. The rule also applies to stray animals, who will need a responsible guardian to sign the authorization form.
