Explosion destroys Iranian consulate in Syria

In a statement to the Security Council, Iran’s permanent mission to the UN rebuked the Israeli attack that he called terrorist and said it was a “flagrant violation of fundamental norms and principles of international law” and the inviolability of diplomatic and consular facilities.

Furthermore, the country said that “reserves its legitimate and inherent right under international law and the Charter of the United Nations to take a decisive response” to attack.

According to Iran, the Israeli attack killed seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, including three commanders: Mohammad Reza Zahedi, Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi and an unidentified senior commander. (Read more about the attack below)

Iran requested an urgent Security Council meeting to discuss Israel’s attack and demanded that the organization condemn the aggression “in the strongest possible terms”.

In the statement, the country also warned that the attack represents a threat to regional peace and security, and could “exacerbate tensions in the region and potentially trigger more conflicts involving other nations.”

The UN Security Council has not yet responded to Iran’s statement and it is not known whether there will be an emergency meeting of the Council to discuss Israel’s attack. O g1 contacted the United Nations to confirm receipt of the document, but did not receive a response until the last update of this report.

Israeli military planes struck the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, this Monday (1st) and killed seven members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, including Mohammad Reza Zahedi, the organization’s senior commander.

Hossein Akbari, Iran’s ambassador to Syria, stated that the consulate was hit by six missiles fired from F-35 fighters. Akbari, who lived in an embassy annex and whose home was hit, escaped unharmed and stated that Iran’s response will be harsh.

The Iranian government held Israel responsible for the consequences of the attack on the consulate in Syria’s capital, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said, according to Iranian state media. The statement was made in a phone call between Hossein and the Syrian Foreign Minister.

An Israeli military spokesman said he would not comment on reports in foreign media. The American newspaper “The New York Times” stated that it spoke to four Israeli officials who asked not to be named and confirmed that the country actually carried out the attack, but did not confirm that commander Reza Zahedi was killed.

Syria’s state TV channel confirmed that the consulate building was attacked. Iranian media also reported that a building near the embassy was hit, and the Iranian students’ news agency said the targets were the consulate and the ambassador’s residence.

The official website of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, states that General Mohammad Reza Zahedi was appointed commander of the ground forces of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards on January 21, 2006.

According to the “New York Times”, he was responsible for Iran’s covert operations in Syria and also in Lebanon.

The terrorist group Hamas, which operates in the Gaza Strip, is supported by Iran. Since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, the Israelis have increased attacks against targets linked to two groups that are active in Syrian territory:

  • The Lebanese group Hezbollah.
  • The Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
