The title Unicorn Overlord is about to complete a month since its release and Atlus is celebrating the large number of sales that the tactical RPG has achieved. In a video on the producer’s Japanese channel, made to showcase the high marks they received from critics, they reveal that it also reached 500,000 units sold.
It is important to put into context that tactical RPG is a very niche subgenre and does not usually achieve large sales figures – even if we discuss already established franchises within it, such as Disgaea or even coming from large studios, such as the case of Triangle Strategy, which was produced by Square Enix.
Considering that Unicorn Overlord has not completed 30 days since its launch, this number becomes even more significant – especially while competing for space with great titans of the gaming world, such as Dragon’s Dogma 2, Rise of the Ronin, Princess Peach : Showtime! and several others.
In Japan, it is also enjoying considerable success and has reached number one sales in recent weeks. The Nintendo Switch version, in particular, dethroned Final Fantasy VII Rebirth from the top of the rankings and has remained in first place ever since.
One of the most curious points is that Atlus and Vanillaware released Unicorn Overlord only on desktop consoles – with versions for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch. So far, there is no plan for it to be released on computers either.
Indicating Unicorn Overlord
Another aspect that strengthened the launch of Unicorn Overlord were the various nominations made by great professionals in the gaming industry. Yasumi Matsuno, known for being the director of Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, for example, has already stated that fans who are asking for remakes should play the new experience.
And, if everything goes well, your predictions will come true. Matsuno stated that he wanted sales of the Atlus game to reach one million units and we are already halfway there.
