Bia Haddad will kick off the clay season at the WTA 500 in Charleston, United States. Currently in 13th position in the world rankings, the Brazilian needs to gain points to remain among the 15 best tennis players on the circuit. Its debut is scheduled for this Wednesday (3). Below, find out all the information about Bia’s participation in the tournament.

The premiere

Bia Haddad is the fifth best ranked in the singles bracket. Therefore, the Brazilian gained the advantage of debuting only in the second round. The list of seeds in Charleston is led by American Jessica Pegula. Next comes the Tunisian Ons Jabeur and the Greek Maria Sakkari.

In 2024, Bia will participate in the WTA 500 in Charleston for the third time in her career. However, the tournament does not bring a good outlook for the Brazilian. In 2015, she fell to Ukrainian Kateryna Volodko in the last round of qualifying. Three years later, she had to withdraw from her main draw debut against Spanish Lara Arruabarrena.

Bia Haddad is facing the North American Caroline Dolehide. At 25 years old, Dolehide is currently ranked 47th in the singles rankings. To reach the second round, he beat compatriot Kayla Day 6/3, 0/6 and 6/4. It will be the first time she plays against the Brazilian in a singles match. However, the two met on the court recently in the doubles quarterfinals in Abu Dhabi. In this ocasion, Bia’s partnership with Luisa Stefani got the better of Caroline and Desirae Krawczyk and advanced to the semi-final.

Ranking situation

Despite early eliminations in Indians Wells and Miami, Bia Haddad remained very close to the top-10. She has 2,870 points at the moment and should only lose 10 points this week. If she wins the title in Charleston, the Brazilian will win another 500 and could reach 10th position in the WTA. It would be a return to the top-10, the last time it was in June of last year.

Points and rewards

The WTA 500 champion from Charleston will pocket around US$142,000 in prize money. Furthermore, whoever lifts the cup also adds 500 points in the ranking. The runner-up wins almost US$90,000 and 325 points. The semi-finalists receive US$44,000 and 195 points, while the quadrifinalists receive US$22,000 and 108 points. Wins in the round of 16 are worth US$11,000 and 60 points. Finally, the first two rounds give around US$5,500 and US$6,900, respectively. In the ranking, the first round gives 1 point and the second 32 points.
