The victory was achieved despite a poor performance from Rubro-Negro, who heard boos from their own fans after the final whistle. The only goal of the match came in the 19th minute of the opening half, when striker Pedro took advantage of a cross from Uruguayan full-back Matías Viña to head home.
Timon triumphs
Another team to take advantage in the 3rd phase of the Copa do Brasil was Corinthians, who, playing at the Arena das Dunas, in Natal, beat the local América 2-1. This result gave Timão the advantage of guaranteeing qualification despite a draw in the second leg, which will be played on May 21st in Itaquera.
Pushed by their fans, who filled the stadium, América opened the scoring with a goal from full-back Marcos Ytalo just 12 minutes into the first half. However, after a good play by Wesley, Corinthians managed to equalize the score thanks to Breno Bidon’s eye for a goal in the 29th minute.
With the score equal, the home team began to take more chances in front, but Timão was more competent to achieve the final victory thanks to a header from defender Cacá in the 17th minute of the final stage.
Tricolor in advantage
In a match played at the Kleber José de Andrade State Stadium, in Cariacica, Espírito Santo, Fluminense beat Sampaio Corrêa 2-0 thanks to goals from midfielder Lima and Colombian midfielder Jhon Arias. This result leaves Tricolor in a comfortable position for the second leg, guaranteeing classification even in the event of a defeat.
