San Luis Potosi (Mexico) – The only Brazilian in the WTA 125 in San Luis Potosi, Laura Pigossi from São Paulo is in the quarterfinals on Mexican clay. In a very busy game full of ups and downs this Wednesday, Brazil’s number 2 came from behind, but managed to recover against China’s Xiaodi You, 224th in the rankings, and won with partial scores of 5/7, 6 /2 and 7/5 after 3h18 of battle.

In the next round, Pigossi will face the winner of the duel between the Slovenian Tamara Zidansek, 118th in the world and Roland Garros semifinalist in 2021, and the Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto, currently 51st in the WTA and second main favorite of the competition, who will also face each other today at the end of the round.

In the two previous meetings with Zidansek, the Brazilian did not win a single set, losing in the debut to Hodmezovasarhely, in Hungary, in 2016, and in the round of 16 in São Paulo, two years later. Against Cocciaretto the confrontation would be unprecedented.

This is Laura’s second participation in San Luis Potosi and she already repeats last year’s result, when she reached the quarterfinals and scored 29 points. The two victories in the current edition yield 27 points, enough to provisionally keep the Brazilian in the current 116th position in the ranking.

After two opening games in which both players had to save break points, it was Pigossi who managed the first two breaks of the opening set, reaching 4/1 and serving. However, the Brazilian saw You reduce her advantage and succumbed once again when she served for the set in the tenth game, allowing her opponent to draw. In the 12th, the Chinese achieved her third break and closed the partial at 7/5.

Again with an inconsistent start from the servers, the second set began with three consecutive service breaks, and in this scenario it was Laura who did better, opening up the advantage again. This time, however, she managed to stay ahead until the end and got another break in the seventh game to then tie the game afterwards.

For the third time in the match, the Brazilian took the lead in the decisive set, obtaining two breaks in the third and fifth games. Just like in the first partial, she had 4/1 and served, but ended up allowing You to react again and lost four games in a row. Serving under enormous pressure, Pigossi finally confirmed his serve again and took the lead on the scoreboard. At closing time, she needed two match-points to achieve her hard-earned classification.
