Miami (USA) – Champion in Miami this Sunday, Jannik Sinner celebrated his third title of the season and the second Masters 1000 of his career. The 22-year-old Italian also guarantees his best ranking, he will overtake Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and become the new number 2 in the world from Monday. The next focus for Sinner is to have a good clay court season, a surface on which she has just one career title, with an eye on the second Grand Slam of the season at Roland Garros.

“It means a lot to me, but the most important thing is I performed great, especially in the semi and final. Being number 2 in the world is an incredible feeling. I never thought it would get to this point. I come from a very normal family. My parents are still working. For me, sport is one thing and life is different. I’m very happy to be in this position and enjoying every moment. These days are special. No matter what type of tournament it is, winning is always special,” said Sinner after his 6-3, 6-1 victory over Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov in this Sunday’s final.

The clay season for Sinner starts in eight days, at the Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo. He was a semifinalist in the tournament last year and knows he will have little time to prepare. But after that, he didn’t defend many points in other events on the floor, as he fell in the quarters in Barcelona, in the round of 16 in Barcelona, in the second round in Paris and didn’t play in Madrid. This puts him in a position to compete for No. 1 with Novak Djokovic in the coming months.

“I’m very relaxed. I feel like I learned a lot of things last year and I know what I can do better. Clay is very physical and I’m in better shape than last season”, pondered the 22-year-old. “There are usually some strange results in Monaco because you don’t have much time to adapt. We’ll start training on Thursday, so it’s not even a week to get used to it. The main objective is certainly Roland Garros. But first I have Rome, which is a very important tournament for me. Playing with the home fans is always incredible.”

After losing two finals in Miami, to Hubert Hurkacz in 2021 and to Daniil Medvedev last year, Sinner won his first Masters 1000 last August, in Toronto, and says that the title in Canada helped him deal better with decisive rounds, which also culminated in the unprecedented Grand Slam in Australia, in January.

“Certainly, winning my first Masters 1000 was important. Before, I had great results, like semis at Indian Wells and Monte Carlo and the final here. I just couldn’t win these titles. Mentally, it was very important to be able to win at least once. Once you win, you realize it’s very special. I took advantage of the moment and flew to Cincinnati and the next day to play again”, reported the tennis player, who now has 13 ATP titles.

“When you’re young, you don’t deal with these situations like I deal with them now. Maybe in the future I will cope even better,” she says. “After Australia, I had three or four days to rest and then I went back to work. It was the same thing after winning the ATP in Rotterdam. And it will be the same thing here. Maybe there are players who enjoy it for a little longer. I know I don’t have much time to prepare for Monte Carlo, but I’ll try to be confident on clay.”

The record of 22 wins and just one defeat this season, with three titles in four tournaments played, surprises the Italian. “I never thought I would start the season like this. But it also means I stay focused in every moment. You know, everything that happened has already happened. With each tournament you go to, you have a new opportunity. That’s how I see it. I have a great team that encourages me. We know what we have to improve. Now the clay season is coming, I’ll start training in three or four days, and we’ll see what I can do this year.”
