The Ana Maria do Couto May Women’s Penitentiary, based in Cuiab, will be the first prison unit in Mato Grosso to benefit from air conditioning units. The expectation is that within 30 days the cells in radius 3 will be refrigerated. Only inmates who work will be able to enjoy the benefit, as determined by the Penitentiary Administration Secretariat (Saap).

Radius 3 of the women’s unit houses inmates who have already been sentenced and therefore have the right to work. The space has 10 cells with six inmates each. Use will be daily with an on and off system and the devices will be on from 10 pm and off at 6 am.

As found in the report, inmates who work with sewing are already taking advantage of the refrigerated space in the space where sewing work is carried out. Saap’s idea is to implement the devices now in the warehouse where transformers are produced for a company in Cuiab.

The next unit that will have the devices implemented in the Central State Penitentiary (PCE), which is located in the Pascoal Ramos neighborhood, in Cuiab. The space houses the main leaders of criminal organizations in the State. The Executive did not say when it intends to extend the benefit to other units.

Deputy wants to remove ICMS

After the State authorized working inmates to have air conditioning, deputy Wilson Santos (PSD) made a recommendation for the Executive to remove the ICMS from air conditioning units, air conditioners and fans in Mato Grosso.

The nomination was presented during the ordinary session, at the Legislative Assembly (ALMT), on Tuesday (30). The parliamentarian explained that, as the State has the resources to pay for the benefits for inmates, it will be able to exempt taxpayers from the aforementioned devices.

“I respect the governor’s opinion, but since he has the financial resources to install air-conditioning devices in prisons, I understand that he can exempt, remove the ICMS from these devices, because we live in a state of very high temperatures”, said the former toucan.
