The 4th shipment of dengue vaccines is scheduled to arrive in Bahia this weekend. With the distribution of vaccines to the 115 priority municipalities, the expectation is to control the epidemic given the increase in registered cases. According to information from Sesab’s Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate (Divep), Bahia will receive a total of 67,087 doses. Salvador, Feira de Santana and Camaçari are among the main recipients of vaccines in the state, with forecasts of 21,994, 6,765 and 3,476 doses, respectively. The municipalities of Salvador and Feira de Santana recently depleted their stock of the vaccine, reflecting the urgency of the arrival of these doses.
The dengue situation in Bahia is alarming, with 162,883 probable cases and 49 deaths recorded to date, mostly in Vitória da Conquista, where 10 people have died. In Bahia, the age group most affected by deaths are elderly people between 60 and 70 years old. Salvador, in turn, already has 6,985 probable cases, with no records of deaths from the disease in the capital.

Among the municipalities of Bahia, 256 are in a state of epidemic, while 24 have declared an emergency or public calamity for dengue, they are: Araci, Barra, Barra do Choça, Bom Jesus da Serra, Bonito, Brumado, Caculé, Caetité, Chorrochó , Conceição do Jacuípe, Condeúba, Feira de Santana, Ibiassucê, Jacaraci, Lagoa Real, Macaúbas, Mairi, Nova Viçosa, Novo Horizonte, Piripá, Quixabeira, Rio do Antônio, Rodelas, Vitória da Conquista
As for vaccination, so far, 140,805 doses have been administered in Bahia and 44,840 doses in Salvador. Aline Ferreira, public health professional and deputy at Divep’s Immunization Coordination, highlighted the importance of daily monitoring of doses applied, aiming to avoid delays in registration by municipalities.
“Constant training has been carried out with the teams so that they can actually infer the doses applied from the official information systems. However, so that we have real-time knowledge, a link was sent to all municipalities so that they can update this spreadsheet daily and we can have the number of doses applied per day in real time. So it’s daily monitoring of doses applied.”
Given the scenario and anticipated increase in dengue cases, Sesab has been adopting integrated measures, including management, epidemiological surveillance, integrated vector management, assistance, communication and social mobilization. The distribution of vaccines should begin quickly after arrival this weekend, with a start date scheduled for next week, enabling a more effective response in the fight against dengue.
