Israeli military planes struck the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria, this Monday (1st) and killed the senior commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Mohammad Reza Zahediaccording to Iranian state media.
According to Syrian state media, at least six people were killed and others were injured.
The Iranian government holds Israel accountable for the consequences of the attack on the consulate in Syria’s capital, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said, according to Iranian state media. The statement was made in a phone call between Hossein and the Syrian Foreign Minister.
Also according to Iranian state media, the country’s government believes that the target was Reza Zahedi.
An Israeli military spokesman said he would not comment on reports in foreign media. The American newspaper “The New York Times” stated that it spoke to four Israeli officials who asked not to be named and confirmed that the country actually carried out the attack, but did not confirm that commander Reza Zahedi was killed.
Syria’s state TV channel confirmed that the consulate building was attacked. Iranian media also reported that a building near the embassy was hit, and the Iranian students’ news agency said the targets were the consulate and the ambassador’s residence.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said the attack on the consulate in Damascus was a violation of all international conventions.
Iran’s ambassador to Syria, Hossein Akbari, who escaped unharmed, said Iran’s response would be tough.
The terrorist group Hamas, which operates in the Gaza Strip, is supported by Iran. Since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, the Israelis have increased attacks against targets linked to two groups that are active in Syrian territory:
- The Lebanese group Hezbollah (see below).
- The Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s official website states that General Mohammad Reza Zahedi was appointed commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards ground forces on January 21, 2006.
According to the “New York Times”, he was responsible for Iran’s covert operations in Syria and also in Lebanon.
Attack on Hezbollah
On Friday, Israel carried out one of its deadliest attacks in months against Syria’s northern Aleppo province.
On the same day, the Israelis stated that they killed a senior Hezbollah commander in LebanonAli Abed Akhsan Naim, deputy commander of Hezbollah’s rocket and missile unit.
The Israeli government claimed he was one of the leaders of the Iranian-backed militia firing rockets with heavy warheads and said he was responsible for conducting and planning attacks on Israeli civilians.
