In 2024, rice and bean prices soared; According to PT member, the government was betting on a fall at the beginning of the harvest

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) said this Friday (April 26, 2024) that he gave a “wavering” for not having imported cheaper rice from Venezuela. According to the PT member, the government expected that the price would fall when the harvest began in Brazil.

“The rice was a bit expensive and the beans were a bit expensive, that’s why there are a lot of angry people […] We hesitated because we should have imported cheaper rice from Venezuela, but we were expecting that when the rice harvest started in Brazil, we would make the rice cheaper”declared Lula during the Embraer aircraft delivery event for Azul, at the Embraer factory, in São José dos Campos (SP).

During his speech, Lula questioned whether the price of rice had already started to fall and was later confirmed that it had. She also said that she was already “eating picanha with beer”but those who don’t eat picanha could buy a “healthy vegetables” of family farming.

In March, the government promised that the price of rice would fall by March. The rise in food prices at the beginning of 2024 led President Lula to demand preventive measures from his assistants. Concern grew after surveys showed a drop in the PT member’s rating.
