A team from Federal Highway Police seized, at km 751 of BR-116, in Poções (BA), 190 wild birds that were illegally transported in a car. A man was arrested, but will be released for the crime.
The birds were found during a routine approach. When inspecting the car, the police found boxes containing the birds in the back seat, covered with a sheet. A total of 106 blackbirds, 68 woodcocks, 13 collared birds, two grasshoppers and one common crested were rescued. According to the Federal Highway Police, the person responsible for the birds had purchased them in Poções to be resold in Feira de Santana (BA).
The birds were taken to the Wild Animal Screening Center from the city hall of Vitória da Conquista (BA). The suspected animal trafficker was released after the incident was recorded.
Feira de Santana and Vitória da Conquista are major centers of wildlife trafficking in Brazil. Through both cities, where there are warehouses that receive animals from different regions, there are routes that supply sales mainly in the Southeast region. At the same time, there are also fairs for local businesses.
