Amazonas leads applications for the City of Manaus 2024 Literary Awards

The 13th edition of the Cidade de Manaus 2024 Literary Awards, launched by the City of Manaus, through the Municipal Council of Culture (Concultura), totaled 574 entries. With 133 participants, Amazonas surpassed other states in Brazil.

Registration closed on April 20th. Following Amazonas, São Paulo appeared, with 120 competitors; Rio de Janeiro, with 58 entries, and Minas Gerais, 55. The total value of the prize is R$80 thousand, divided into prizes of R$8 thousand, for each of the ten literary genres established in the notice.

The president of Concultura, Neilo Batista, highlighted that the high demand for Amazonian authors proves the vigor and relevance of the awards. “We show, once again, that we have a rich literature and with generations of literati who mark the world of letters in Brazil and abroad. Our competition has the important role of revealing talents and giving visibility to their works,” he said.

The coordinator of the Literary Awards and vice-president of Concultura, Carlos Guedelha, pointed out that Amazonas has proven to be a source of great writers, has a considerable literary tradition and the Literary Awards have confirmed this with each edition.

“Congratulations to those who registered their works, not letting this valuable opportunity pass by. In each category, the works entered will be carefully analyzed by committees made up of renowned writers and literature teachers. The author of the best book in each of the ten categories will receive a significant cash prize and have their work published”, highlighted Guedelha.

In the genre ranking, the largest number of entries was poetry (Violet White award), with 192; novel or soap opera (Álvaro Maia award), 110; short stories (Arthur Engrácio award), 97; children and youth (Alfredo Fernandes award), 48; theater (Álvaro Braga prize, 27; chronicles (Péricles Moraes prize), 40; Amazonian themes (Djalma Batista prize), 33; essays (Samuel Benchimol prize), 13; memory or literary journalism (Áureo Nonato prize), 11; essay on popular traditions (Mário Ypiranga Monteiro prize), 3, which, as they did not reach the number of seven works, will not compete for the prize.

The winning works will be published in digital and/or printed format.

Phases

The next stages of the competition are analysis of the works by the judging committees, between April 25th and June 24th, and preliminary results on June 26th, with a ten-day deadline for administrative appeals.
