Venezuelan child dies with signs of malnutrition in southern Bahia

A 2-year-old child died after being hospitalized with signs of malnutrition in Itabuna, in the south of Bahia. The death occurred on Tuesday (7), at Manoel Novaes Hospital.

As reported by TV Santa Cruz, an affiliate of TV Bahia in the region, the situation in the space is unhealthy, with a strong odor amidst the rubble and dirt.

The child had already been hospitalized with the same signs of malnutrition in April. At the time, she was treated and recovered, but suffered from the problem again.

The girl died of malnutrition, diarrhea and low weight. Her body was laid to rest on Wednesday afternoon (8), at the school.

When questioned by the broadcaster, the city hall did not comment on the problem. In a statement, the municipal management only referred to the fall of a wall in the space — an incident that also happened on Tuesday (7), with no injuries.

According to the city hall, the collapse occurred after infiltration resulting from the rain. The Civil Defense Coordination inspected the school unit and must take action in this regard.

Subsequently, in a new statement, the municipal management reported that it has been providing humanitarian assistance to the immigrant group for nine months, which includes providing special meals for the children.

“It also offers cleaning and personal hygiene material, health care, referral to the school network and sanitary care”, says an excerpt of the text.

The city hall states that the situation is a reflection of the “different culture” of the indigenous people. “Immigrants are not very concerned about hygiene, they even do not comply with sanitary and environmental guidelines regarding the packaging of waste.”

Meanwhile, the Secretariat for Social Promotion and Combating Poverty (Semps) provides a technical team with a social worker and psychologist who accompanies the group inside the shelter. The servers report having already drawn the attention of immigrants regarding the children’s nutrition.
