Taking a bus in any major city in Brazil is commonplace. Often problematic, but commonplace. However, this story began a long time ago. And the starting point was here in Rio de Janeiro.

In 1908, traveling the route of Mauá Square The Red Beachthe first bus (in the sense we know it today) circulated in Rio de Janeiro.

I say “in the sense we know today” because more than a century before 1908, there were already animal-drawn vehicles that carried many passengers and were called buses.

The 1908 vehicle had a German-made Dailer engine and a French Guy body. That’s why it was called Dailer Guy. It was the first motorized bus not only in Rio de Janeiro, but in all of Brazil.

This first trip, from Praça Mauá to Praia Vermelha, was symbolic, a debut. There were visitors from National Exhibition of 1908, which was part of the commemorations of the 100 years since the opening of the Ports per D. João VI. At the time, the City hall of the city of Rio granted a provisional license for the vehicle that carried few passengers.

The first regular line was between Praça Mauá and Passeio Público. This route was designed by the businessman Otávio da Rocha Miranda.

The first bus company in Rio would only become official in 1911. It was called Auto-Avenida. From then on, the story went on and on.

With more than half a century of tradition in the Rio de Janeiro real estate market, Sergio Castro Imóveis – the company that resolves it – contributes to the appreciation of Rio de Janeiro culture
