O Channel Brazil prepared a special program with a feature film and three shorts, one of which is new, all directed by filmmakers from Alagoas, who bring the region’s accent, culture and cast. On May 9th, starting at 7:30 pm, the following films will be shown: the new “Trench”by Paulo Silver, “The Boat”by Nilton José Melo de Resende, “Infantry”by Laís Santos Araújo, and the feature film “Horse”by Rafhael Barbosa and Werner Salles.

The program starts at 7:30 pm with the short film “Trincheira”, which tells the story of a boy (Gabriel Nunes Xavier) who lives in a landfill next to a luxurious condominium. The film essentially deals with social inequality, which is represented through the imagination and illusion of the boy, who uses all the materials he finds in the dump to create the environment he imagines exists on the other side of the wall. The short was highly awarded and was part of, for example, the National Competitive Exhibition at the 48th Gramado Festival, as well as international festivals such as the DYTIATKO International Children’s Media Festival, in Ukraine and the 2nd Mo&Friese Children’s Short Film Festival, in Hamburg.

“A Barca”, shown at 7:45 pm, shows two women who spend Christmas Eve on a boat and all the anguish they experience, while talking about life and death. The short is based on the short story “Natal na Barca”, by Lygia Fagundes Telles, and was nominated in the Best Fiction Short Film category at the Brazilian Cinema Grand Prix, in 2021. “Infantaria”, which will be shown at 8pm on the same day , brings to the screen the dilemmas of adolescence in a conservative country. The short takes place at a birthday party and discusses themes such as maturity and paternal absence. In 2023, the film received the Special International Jury Prize at the Generation 14plus Exhibition, at the Berlin Film Festival, in addition to winning the Curta Cinema Festival, which qualified it to compete for a place at the 2024 Oscars.

To close the tribute, the film “Cavalo”, the first feature film from Alagoas made with a public notice, mixes fiction and documentary and brings the memory of ancestry through the body. The title of the production makes a reference to people from African-based religions who are able to incorporate entities into their bodies. The film was part of the National Exhibition of the 7th Mostra de Cinema de Gostoso, among other important exhibitions, in addition to being part of the Oscar selection process competing for a place to represent Brazil in the competition.
