The Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam) received around a thousand community leaders during a Special Session in honor of May 5th, National Community Leaders’ Day. The proposal was headed by the president of Aleam, Roberto Cidade (UB), and supported by all deputies and state deputies, in a collective proposal. Present at the event, in addition to the president of the House and the vice-president, Carlinhos Bessa (PV), deputies João Luiz (Republicans), Rozenha (PMB), Dr. Gomes (Podemos), Felipe Souza (PRD), Adjuto Afonso (UB) and deputy Alessandra Campelo (Podemos).

Having a crucial role in ensuring access to public policies, especially in more peripheral communities, community leaders from Manaus and the Metropolitan Region attended the Belarmino Lins auditorium, at the headquarters of the Legislative Branch. Among his attributes, the community leader listens to the population’s wishes and acts as their representative before the Public Power, seeking to request the implementation of measures that ensure the quality of life of the inhabitants of a given region.

“May 5th is community leader day and in the Assembly we always hold this ceremony to give a certificate of Honor to Merit and congratulate this class. We are bringing together more than a thousand community leaders, people who are the managers of their neighborhoods, who are often in need there and do not have the necessary support. I am very happy to come to Casa do Povo, on a crowded Monday, with the main leaders of Manaus”, celebrated Roberto Cidade.

The community leader in the Parque 10 de Novembro neighborhood, Central South zone, Luiz Henrique de Souza, defined the community leader as the person who gives and dedicates himself to meeting the demands of the community.

“It’s that person who is well connected and identified with the residents, with the families in the community. With great joy, we represent our community in the Parque 10 neighborhood, where we have affinity, and this gives us the feeling of being with the community, representing it, seeking to meet the demands of public authorities”, he explained.

Deputy Rozenha believes that this is a very lucid moment for the Legislative Assembly to propose the celebration. “A community leader is a super councilor, because he is the one who receives the demands, it is at his house that the demands arrive, he is the one that people ask for help and we need to support these people more and more, as they play a social role of a lot of depth in the city, where it really needs to be reached with the help of the Public Power”, he stated.

The community leader in Rio Preto da Eva (57 kilometers as the crow flies from Manaus), Mocilênia Cavalcanti Leite, believes that being a community leader means putting yourself in someone else’s shoes. “A leader doesn’t think about himself, he thinks about others. He wants to help others. It’s when we set out to help someone and look for things in the interests of others and not our own,” she commented.

According to deputy João Luiz, community leaders are those who feel the people’s pain, listen to people’s anxieties and bring them to parliament. Aleam’s vice-president, Carlinhos Bessa, said that people who embrace the community and feel the needs need to be valued. Representative Alessandra Campelo said that being a leader is like an arm of politics and politicians.

“He is the one who is in people’s daily lives and is able to bring these demands. And a parliamentary mandate, a mandate from the Executive, is only useful if it helps the people. If it doesn’t serve that purpose, it doesn’t serve any purpose. And how are we going to serve the people? Through these people who bring the demands. So, I am very happy to be able to pay tribute to these people who help us help the population”, he said.
