Acre has just over 43% of the adult population in default, according to monitoring carried out by Serasa in March. That month, the Default Map showed that there was a slight reduction in relation to February, going from 43.67% to 43.66%.

The index leaves the state in 14th place in the ranking of states with the most defaulters, that is, people who fail to honor some financial commitment made over a period of time. In the northern region, Acre is sixth on the list headed by the state of Amapá, which has 52.24% of the adult population in default.

According to the Brazilian Association of Financial Education Professionals (Abefin), A person is in default when they do not meet financial obligations when they are due, that is, they are late with their payments. Already the in debt is the one who assumes short, medium or long-term financial commitments. For example, loans, financing, installments or even monthly expenses, such as electricity, water, post-paid telephone bills, among others.

At a national level, Acre was close to the country’s average, which was 44.3% of the adult population defaulting in March. Also according to the study, 50.4% of the defaulting population is made up of women. The age group with the highest rate of late or non-compliance with payments is between 41 and 60 years old, at 35.1%.

The majority of defaults in Brazil are attributed to credit cards (29.34%), followed by basic bills such as water, electricity and gas (22.9%), financial institutions (17%) and services (11%) .

A study of the National Confederation of Commerce of Goods, Services and Tourism (CNC) published in March this year showed that around 78% of families in Acre have debt, a rate above the national average, which is 28% of families in debt. The number, according to research, represents 98,460 families with debt.

Furthermore, according to the Acre Commerce Federation (Fecomércio-AC), just over 11% of families say they cannot organize their accounts.

The advisor to the presidency of Fecomércio, Egídio Garó, highlights that the index of indebted families in the stateshowed a small reduction in comparison with November 2023, rising from 78.5% to 78%, reached in February this year. Although, between February 2023 and the same month in 2024, there was an increase in the number of families with overdue bills.

“The level of debt, however, has been reducing since November last year, with an indicator of 78% compared to the 78.5% observed at that time. On the other hand, the number of Acre families with outstanding bills went from 13.9% in February 2023 to 25.7% in February this year, mainly in families with a monthly income of up to 10 minimum wages”, stated Garó.

Nationally, the rate of indebted families was 0.2%. In the country, 11.9% of indebted families say they are unable to organize their debts. In September, the percentage was 13%. The average income commitment of those in debt remained in the range of 30%.

Also according to Fecomércio-AC, most families that are unable to organize their debts have an income of up to 10 minimum wages.

“Such data should increase in the coming months due to the scourge of flooding occurring throughout the State, notably in Rio Branco, the capital, due to the losses generated”, he concluded.
