Bahian project that encourages rural production inspires other countries

The Bahia Produtiva project, carried out by the Regional Development and Action Company (CAR), from 2015 to 2022, served as an inspiration for other countries. Colombia is one example, which is implementing a similar project, Caribe Produtivo.

According to CAR, Bahia has stood out as a global reference in rural development actions, being internationally recognized for the success of its projects.

According to the state government, the initiative directly benefited more than 40 thousand families and invested around R$749.8 million in 1,207 actions.

In 2023, representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MADR) and the Rural Development Agency (ADR) of Colombia visited Bahia to learn more about the state government’s structuring actions, carried out via CAR.

During the visit, the group had the opportunity to participate in technical missions and meet cooperatives supported through the Bahia Produtiva project.

Recently, representatives of Bahian cooperatives, such as the Presidente Tancredo Neves Rural Producers Cooperative (Coopatan) and the Mixed Coffee Growers Cooperative of Barra do Choça and region (Cooperbac), shared their experiences in the virtual event: “Conversation on Associativism and Cooperatives in Bogotá ”, consolidating the process of preparing the Productive Caribbean Project.

Bahia received two Colombian missions in 2023, during which the manager of the Bahia Produtiva project by the World Bank, Erivelthon Lima, also participated.

“Bahia is a very successful reference in construction and, mainly, in practical actions of rural development, cooperativism, associations, technical assistance and rural extension and access to markets. This experience is essential to be shared with other states and countries”, she highlighted.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Colombia, Jhenifer Mojica, stated: “the project implemented in Brazil inspires our agri-food supply policy by strengthening family farming and cooperativism”.

Bahia that Produces and Feeds

Based on the success of Bahia Produtiva, the State Government is implementing the new rural development project, the Bahia que Produz e Alimenta Project, which aims to serve 30 thousand families and encompass the improvement and expansion of infrastructure, services and integration of productive organizations to markets.

The project, carried out by CAR, a public company linked to the Secretariat of Rural Development (SDR), also aims to strengthen agroecology, environmental management and climate resilience, following the successful legacy of Bahia Produtiva and ensuring the sustainable development of rural Bahia.
