Anyone interested in being an organ donor can register their wish on the CNJ website or app
Starting this Tuesday (2), anyone who wants to be an organ donor will be able to register their wish on the website or in the app. CNJ – National Council of Justice. This will ensure that relatives and the healthcare system are aware of the decision.
In 2013, after a heart attack at the age of 36, retiree Alexandre Ventura Domingues received the doctors’ sentence: he would only live another 11 months.
“The feeling we feel is as if a hole opened and you fell into that hole with that sentence”, he says.
With a genetic heart disease, Alexandre joined the queue for a transplant; other diseases appeared. Until, in 2023, the phone rang. It was the heart transplant center that Alexandre needed so much.
“And when you wake up after the transplant, in the surgical ICU, and look at your chest and see that the transplant was performed, then you say: ‘Now I’m going to stay alive’. It’s something that has no explanation. You feel you feel alive again, you are reborn again, you can see the possibility of making plans and projects that you left sitting in a drawer. So it’s a very unique thing, which has no explanation”, says Alexandre.
Today, 42 thousand people are waiting in line for a transplant in Brazil; 500 of them are children. In 2023, 3,000 people died before finding a donor.
A campaign by the National Council of Justice in partnership with registry offices and the Ministry of Health wants to change this scenario and encourage donations.
Today, the person who authorizes donation in the event of brain death is the patient’s family. This won’t change, but to make the line move faster, the campaign wants to make the intention to donate more transparent. Starting this Tuesday, anyone who wants to express this intention will be able to register the donation on the app or website www.aedo.org.br.
This will allow the National Transplant System to access the authorization, which can be presented to the family, proving the donor’s desire and will. This is what can help family members decide.
The reporter from JNZileide Silva, gave a personal statement:
“I am a transplant recipient and I thank the two families who, at an extremely difficult time, agreed to donate the two corneas I have today.”
Minister Luis Felipe Salomão, national inspector of Justice, said that, with the clear manifestation of future donors, the The number of transplants, which was a record in 2023, is expected to increase even further.
“With this campaign, we will have an unequivocal statement. Anyone who wants to donate will be able to quickly, simply, free of charge, leave it on record – ‘I want to be a donor, I want to save lives’ -, and from there, a consultation also very quickly by health agencies to allow organ donation and transplantation”, says the minister.
