The “Coloring, Trailing and Including” project is an initiative that seeks to promote art and professionalization in the prison system of Rio Grande do Norte, stimulating reflections on responsibility, self-knowledge and self-esteem. The result of partnerships between the NGOs Acauã, Novos Rumos and the State Secretariat for Penitentiary Administration (SEAP), together with the contributions of Miguel Carcará and Reinaldo Waisman, the project demonstrates a commitment to social integration and the dignity of the individuals involved.

The project is a pioneer in the state, being the first time it has been carried out with adults in a closed regime. The classes, which include drawing and graffiti workshops, are being developed at the Mário Negócio State Agricultural Penal Complex, in Mossoró, in a module of 12 classes, lasting 2 hours each, and taking place every 15 days. Closing the module of this unit, the expectation is that the project will cover two more penitentiaries in the state in the coming months of this year.

Miguel Carcará, rapper, graffiti artist, pedagogue, popular educator and coordinator of the Africores project, teaches graffiti workshops in the project and teaches inmates about the art. “This project is fully in line with Hip-hop culture, bringing knowledge to those who need it and are part of our population. It is of fundamental importance for the self-knowledge of those who have private freedom. This project is also very important to me, as an educator, because with it I have also been transforming myself and acquiring self-knowledge.”highlights the artist.

The use of art such as graffiti and drawings, as forms of artistic and professional expression, represents a significant step in breaking stereotypes. Furthermore, the project provides real opportunities for learning and growth. “The proposal to leave graffiti works in prisons is a tangible way of bringing life and color to an environment often perceived as dark and desolate.”he defends.

NGO Acauã promotes humanization in the prison system

One of the missions of the NGO Acauã is to promote the humanization of the prison system and seek criminal individuality and the social reintegration of the prison population. “We seek to achieve this through educational initiatives, training programs and psychosocial support, aiming not only at punishment, but also at the rehabilitation and reintegration of individuals into society., explains the mission of the NGO.

The organization works on other social projects in prisons in RN, always with the aim of promoting the reinsertion of inmates into civil society. It is in this context that the NGO’s partnership with “Colorindo, Trilhando e Including” was born.

“We envision a future where justice is restorative and recovery-oriented, contributing to a more inclusive, equitable and compassionate society”, highlights the organization’s vision.
