Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Emmanuel Macron, of France, sign at least 15 bilateral agreements this Thursday (28), the European leader’s last day in Brazil. Macron and Lula will meet in the morning at Palácio do Planalto to close and announce the acts between the two countries, which should include technical cooperation between Embrapa and the French counterpart, modernization of public management, the audiovisual sector and the creation of an immunology center in Ceará .
Afterwards, there will be a lunch for the French president at the Itamaraty Palace. In the afternoon, Macron will meet with the president of the Senate and National Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
Macron arrived in Brazil on Tuesday (26) and was received by Lula. They went on board a boat along the Guamá River towards Combu Island, where they visited a local cocoa producer. It was the French president’s first time in the Amazon.
Afterwards, the European leader honored chief Raoni Metuktire, from the Kayapo ethnic group, with the Order of the Legion of Honor, France’s highest decoration, created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. It is awarded to citizens who stand out in activities on the global stage.
During the ceremony honoring Raoni, Lula once again declared that Brazil has no intention of transforming the Amazon into a “sanctuary of humanity”.
“We want to share exploration and research with the world, but we want indigenous people to be able to participate in everything that is enjoyed. And we will continue to demarcate indigenous lands and make reserves,” he stated. In August last year, during an agenda in Parintins (AM), the president had made the same statement.
Submarine
This Wednesday (27), Macron and Lula participated in the launch ceremony of the Tonelero, a conventional diesel-electric propulsion submarine, at the Itaguaí Naval Base (RJ). The equipment was built through the Submarine Program (Prosub), in a partnership between Brazil and France made in 2008.
During the event, Lula stated that Brazil does not want knowledge of nuclear technology to wage war, but rather to guarantee the resource to all countries that want peace. The PT member announced the creation of the Bilateral Armaments Committee in conjunction with the French government.
Mercosur and European Union
Until the end of Macron’s official visit to Brazil, the two presidents must also discuss the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. Macron is one of the European presidents most critical of the partnership.
His assessment is that the negotiations could negatively affect the competitiveness of the French in relation to the South Americans, mainly on the agricultural issue. Negotiations should resume in the second half of the year, and the Brazilian side expects it to be concluded this year.
