Debt and ambush surround cruel murder of elderly man in the interior of SC

The cruel murder of a 76-year-old man was premeditated and motivated by a debt, according to the Civil Police. The crime took place in January this year, in the west of Santa Catarina, but the police investigation was concluded this week. Investigations indicate that Valdemar Dias He fell into an ambush and was killed by a trio, one of whom owed him money. The body was found in the middle of a pine plantation in the interior of Ponte Serrada.

One of the suspects had already been arrested in January and the other two were detained during the investigation of the case. Valdemar lived in Coronel Freitas, but was lured to Ponte Serrada, 86 kilometers from where he lived, for an alleged property sale negotiation. There, he was attacked to death with several knife blows.

Crime was premeditated

The elderly man disappeared on January 12th and, initially, the family suspected that he had been kidnapped. On the same day, his truck was found abandoned in the interior of Chapecó. Three days later, the elderly man’s body was located, with several punctures, in the middle of a pine plantation in Ponte Serrada, more than 80 kilometers from where the vehicle was located.

During the investigations, the Criminal Investigation Division (DIC) team found that the crime was planned for more than a month and that the trio’s objective was to commit the murder in December 2023. However, as the elderly man went traveling, the criminal action was not completed on the planned date.

When Valdemar returned, therefore, he fell into an ambush and was taken to the place of death. According to the Civil Police, the crime was motivated by financial interests, as one of the perpetrators owed the victim a debt of more than R$200,000. A second person involved was also experiencing financial difficulties and the third, according to investigations, worked on the farm owned by the man who masterminded the murder. The intention was for the three to obtain financial compensation.

The trio was indicted for double homicide, due to a base motive and the use of resources that made the victim’s defense difficult and impossible. They remain in prison and await a trial date.
