Most of the 2025 Carnival Carnival plots will celebrate blackness

-

Seven of the nine samba schools in the Rio de Janeiro Carnival Special Group that have already announced their plots for 2025 have chosen themes linked to blackness and black personalities.

The predominance of these themes highlights the importance of Afro-Brazilian culture in the country’s biggest popular festival.

Estação Primeira de Mangueira was the last to reveal its plot, entitled “À Flor da Terra – No Rio da Negritude entre Dores e Paixões”, which explores the history and black influence in the center of Rio de Janeiro.

The plot reflects a greater tendency among samba schools to address cultural, historical and social issues linked to Afro-descendance.

What do you need to know:

  • Focus on Afro-descendant Themes: 7 of the 12 schools in the Special Group chose Afro-centered plots.
  • Plot Example: Mangueira with “À Flor da Terra – No Rio da Negritude entre Dores e Paixões”.
  • Cultural Relevance: Recognition and appreciation of Afro-Brazilian culture.

Plot Details

The themes chosen by Mangueira, Salgueiro, Viradouro, Portela, Imperatriz Leopoldinense, Paraíso do Tuiuti and Unidos da Tijuca range from stories of quilombola leaders and revolutionary figures to the exploration of Afro-Brazilian spiritual and religious rituals.

For example, Viradouro will cover the life of Malunguinho, while Portela will pay tribute to singer Milton Nascimento.

Historical and Social Context

Babalawô Ivanir dos Santos, professor at UFRJ, comments on the importance of these plots in a scenario of racism and religious intolerance in Brazil.

According to him, samba schools are returning to their roots and contributing significantly to the anti-racist fight through carnival.

Other Plots and Perspectives

In addition to Afro-descendant themes, other schools such as Beija-Flor and Grande Rio chose to honor personalities and explore the cultural richness of the state of Pará, respectively.

The choice of plots reflects a diversity of themes and approaches, highlighting the rich cultural tapestry of Rio Carnival.
