Agility, speed and low cost are some of the benefits of purchasing a motorcycle, even more so these days, but along with the advantages also unfortunately come the consequences of becoming vulnerable. This week alone, 10 people died on a motorcycle, the majority in Campo Grande.

According to data from the GGIT (Office of Integrated Traffic Management), the main victims of traffic, motorcyclists account for 62.5% of victims in the entire historical series, with 743 deaths between 2011 and 2023.

Among the victims are a baby still inside its mother’s womb and two motorcyclists who died in practically the same place. Carlos Eduardo Freitas de Melo, 19 years old, the motorcyclist who died this Saturday morning (27) after losing control of the vehicle and hitting an iron pole at Residencial Oliveira, in Campo Grande. With the strong impact he was thrown 7 meters away.

On Friday night (26) Luciana Nere Amorim, aged 39, and Matheus Oliveira Benites, aged 22, died after crashing the motorcycle they were riding against a car on BR-262 in Campo Grande. The suspicion is that a tire on the motorcycle burst and caused the crash.

On the same day, José Carminati Sobrinho, 52 years old, died in an accident on BR-376 in Nova Andradina. He was on his way to the band Capital Inicial’s show, when he ended up running over an ox in the middle of the track. A woman who was also on the motorcycle was rescued.

On Thursday (25) Luiz Bartolo Louveiro, aged 55, also died on BR-262 in an overtaking attempt. The accident also involved a truck and a trailer. The truck and the motorcycle were traveling in the same direction, and the motorcyclist allegedly overtook and collided head-on with the bucket truck, which blew out the tire and the driver ended up losing control of the steering wheel. The impact of the crash destroyed the cabins of the trailer and truck.

The truck then crashed into the trailer. The two drivers, of the trailer and the truck, were rescued in serious condition by the Fire Department and taken to Santa Casa.

On Wednesday (24) Milton Justino Pereira, aged 66, died in Santa Casa de Campo Grande, where he was taken after being hit by a truck that advanced into Vila Progresso.

He was riding a motorcycle when he was hit by a truck, at the intersection of Rua Estevão Capriata and Thomas Edson. The motorcyclist stopped under the truck.

Also on Wednesday, a 64-year-old motorcyclist died after hitting the side of a Fiat Argo in Jardim América, in Campo Grande. He would have run a red light.

Jussamara da Silva Ferreira, 24 years old, 9 months pregnant, died on Tuesday morning (23) after suffering an accident on MS-485, in Aral Moreira. She was on the motorcycle with her husband and two other children, when a pickup truck collided with the back of the motorcycle.

The 3-year-old boy suffered a cut to his scalp, her husband had bruises on his body and the one-year-old girl had a broken arm. Jussamara lost the baby in the accident. She was rescued but later also died in the hospital.

On Saturday (20), João Victor Cardoso de Moura died hours after crashing the motorcycle he was riding into a tree on Avenida Lúdio Martins Coelho, in Campo Grande. He reportedly lost control on a bend in the road.

João Victor was driving the motorcycle and heading to his mother’s house, together with a friend. Next to a wholesaler, the tree was hit.

In another case that shocked the city, it involved a motorcyclist as the perpetrator. He allegedly ran over the 3-year-old boy, Luiz Adryano Rodrigues, in Campo Grande, in the Paulo Coelho Machado neighborhood, last Sunday (21). The child died and the motorcyclist who fled. He is still being sought by the police.
