Santa Catarina had the lowest poverty rate in Brazil in 2023 according to the study produced by the Jones dos Santos Neves Institute (IIJSN) and released last week. However, even with a reduction, 11.6% of the State’s population still lives on less than R$664.02 per month and is considered poor.

According to the study, Santa Catarina achieved a reduction of 1.3 percentage points in the poverty rate in 2023, compared to 2022, when 12.8% of the Santa Catarina population was considered poor.
The extreme poverty rate also showed a reduction over the years. Last year, the percentage of the population considered extremely poor was 1.4%. In 2022, the number was 1.8%.

The data produced by the research were converted using Purchasing Power Parity (PPC) criteria. Thus, the monthly values of the poverty and extreme poverty lines were R$664.02 and R$208.42. Thus, people who lived on amounts lower than these were considered poor or extremely poor.
Santa Catarina was considered by IIJSN as the state with the lowest poverty rate in Brazil. The population of the Santa Catarina territory is ahead of Rio Grande do Sul, which has a 14.4% poverty rate, and the Federal District, with 15.6%.

In Brazil, the poverty rate fell from 31.6% in 2022 to 27.5% in 2023, considered the lowest level in the series started in 2012, with a reduction of around 4.2 percentage points. In other words, in absolute terms, the Brazilian population considered poor decreased from 67.8 million in 2022 to 59.2 million in 2023.
