The Public Ministry of the State of Rio de Janeiro and the Regional Electoral Court (TRE-RJ) outlined strategic actions to curb the activities of organized crime in the 2024 municipal elections process, with the first and second rounds scheduled for the 6th and 27th of October, respectively.

“We are drawing up a strategy for action in the municipal election and creating a mechanism so that criminal organizations are unable to infiltrate chambers and city halls,” said the Attorney General of Justice, Luciano Mattos, after meeting with the president of TRE-RJ , judge Henrique Carlos de Andrade Figueira, on the afternoon of this Tuesday (26).

Luciano Mattos highlighted that the purpose of the meeting was to align articulated and integrated intelligence actions that result in an effective protocol for repressive action against candidates linked to organized crime. “The institutions are working together and with all their dedication in this year’s elections, so that we have a clean, fair and effective election, without criminal conduct and illicit interventions posing a risk to the normality of the electoral process,” said the attorney general.

For judge Henrique Figueira, the security of the electoral process and the dismantling of these criminal organizations are the main focuses of the 2024 election. “We are joining forces with public security forces to guarantee citizens a transparent and democratic process”, stated the president from TRE-RJ.

During an election year, one of the duties of electoral prosecutors is to analyze and, eventually, challenge requests for candidacy registration made by parties, party federations and candidates.
