The João Calvino Presbyterian School, in Rio Branco, in partnership with the government of Acre, was a finalist at the Brazilian Science and Engineering Fair (Febrace) and ended the event with four awards, which reinforce the work carried out at the institution. The school receives resources from the Acre government to hire staff and, in return, does not charge monthly fees and absorbs students from the public school system.

Febrace is considered the largest science fair in Latin America and, according to professor Paulo Cezar Augusto, one of the project coordinators, served to highlight education in Acre, which is aligned with science, technology and sustainability.

The project is for 2nd year A students and proposes sustainable air conditioning for small environments. The air conditioner is made from recyclable and reused materials, in a simple and practical way. A Styrofoam box is used to maintain the temperature, a PVC knee, a 12 volt computer cooler, a 9 volt battery and some electrical wires, using ice water and ice as fuel. Escola João Calvino was the only school in Acre to be a finalist at the fair.

“We competed in several categories and our school was awarded in four of them. We came in sixth place out of the top 10. They awarded ten projects, which would be the top 10, and we came in sixth place, highlighting that in this category, popular vote award, there were 226 projects competing, and we came in sixth place. So, we brought great results to our state and that is very important. We show that we have a quality education, committed to values, citizenship, ethics, with teaching really focused on science and technology, so that the educational process is truly complete, preparing our students as fully individuals”, he said.

The teacher also highlighted the importance of the State government’s encouragement, through the Department of Education (SEE), so that students could once again participate in this event.

“It was unprecedented to bring these awards to the state. Our school is very happy with this achievement. We only have words of gratitude to the State Department of Education, in the person of Secretary Aberson Carvalho, who gave us total support, who helped us with accommodation, travel and food. We represent our state with dignity and this highlight shows the value that our Acre has. It was a great event and I am very proud of our achievements and our achievements in highlighting and elevating our educational process, because it shows that the government is on the right path,” he emphasized.

The Secretary of Education, Aberson Carvalho, highlighted that the State gave all its support to these students and is now also celebrating this victory.

“I am extremely happy with the achievement of the João Calvino School students in participating in the Brazilian Science and Engineering Fair (Febrace), with the Sustainable Climatizer project, held in São Paulo. The Department of Education provided full support to students and teams of teachers, with tickets, food and accommodation. Thank God, the results were extremely positive, and now these students return home bringing with them the victory in these categories, as well as a lot of experience in teaching and research.”

Since 2013, the school, which covers primary and secondary education, has been dedicated to including the following areas in the school curriculum: science, technology, environment and society. The aim is to make students understand science, know how to use it in their daily lives, with regard to the environment, and provide answers to society.

Among the projects, there is the biodigester, which replaces cooking gas and won the highlight award at the 21st edition of Febrace and, on this occasion, came in 5th place in the popular vote; the solar panel made from cardboard and bottle; and the Olho no Rio app, which aims to solve social problems. The platform contains several types of important information about the main rivers and their tributaries.
