Max Healey, co-founder of Media Molecule, confessed that Microsoft tried to take LittleBigPlanet from Sony, at an early stage of the project in which the owner of Xbox even tried to prevent the British studio from going to rival PlayStation.

In an interview with MinnMax, Healey shared the surprising revelation that in 2006, at a time when Media Molecule had not yet signed anything with Sony, Microsoft tried its luck and acquired the game we know as LittleBigPlanet.

“The funny thing is, we actually had nothing in writing to say that we were actually going to stay with Sony or that they owned what we were doing, that’s my recollection of that,” Healey said. “Technically, we could have done it. We could have thought ‘Yeah, screw it, let’s go with Microsoft. They’ll probably give us a lot of money.”

However, they felt that this would be morally wrong, even after an enthusiastic presentation by a Microsoft representative at the end of a drinking night. According to Healey, the Microsoft representative said that if they left Sony to move forward with Xbox it would be very exciting, but Media Molecule did not want to betray the relationships already formed with Sony.

“That would never happen. We had already created a good relationship with Sony, so it was basically a given.” Furthermore, Healey says that there should probably already be some paper linking them to Sony, even if he doesn’t remember it precisely.
