Understand more about the history of surfing

According to the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), some reports say that the habit of riding waves has existed for more than 2000 years, with the first official records of surfing being made by the English explorer James Cook, in Hawaii, in 1778.

However, there are even older records of a type of surfing practiced in Peru. This is because fishermen in the region had a boat and used the waves to return to dry land. Out of curiosity, the name of this species of canoe is called “Caballito de Totora”.

Surfing at the Olympics

According to the official website of the Paris 2024 Olympics, the campaign to include surfing in the Olympics began in the 1920s, with Hawaiian Olympic swimming champion Duke Kahanamoku as the main spokesperson for this request.

Despite this, the International Olympic Committee only accepted surfing as an Olympic sport about a century later, at the Tokyo games in 2020, with men’s and women’s categories.

Surfing rules

First of all, the surfing events will be held between July 27th and August 8th. In them, surfers perform maneuvers and tricks on waves chosen by them. Afterwards, surfers are judged by five judges based on factors such as movement variety and difficulty. Additionally, factors such as force and flow are also considered.

Finally, the boards used are shortboards, smaller in size compared to the others and which can be better handled, also making maneuvering easier.
